Identity, 2023
VR Film, 11 minutes
Produced by Le Fresnoy
Armenian artist Gohar Martirosyan, currently residing in Paris, presents Identity, a profound exploration into the intricacies of personal integrity. Using a 360° view, this VR film immerses viewers in the challenging landscape of self-perceived unity. This “self” is characterised by its inherent complexities: internal conflicts, power hierarchies, equilibrium, and disarray. Martirosyan prompts viewers to engage in introspection, echoing larger societal dynamics and connections. The narrative masterfully weaves together autobiographical elements of performer Sacha Eusebe with inspirations from Anaïs Nin’s The Diary, Vol. 1. In Nin’s words, “I have always been tormented by the image of a multiplicity of selves. Some days I call it richness, and other days I see it as a disease [...]. My first concept about people around me was that all of them were coordinated into a whole, whereas I was composed of a multitude of selves, of fragments.”
